Adoption Services is pleased to be able to act as an International Placing
Agency for adoptions from China. The
following information is provided to help you understand the adoption process
and assist you in compiling the dossier you will need to provide for the Chinese
government. The
children from China are usually eight months and older at the time of referral.
Healthy girls and and a few boys and children with special needs are available.
Couples and singles 30 to 45 years of age may adopt infants. Couples and singles 45 to 50 years of age can adopt toddlers.
Persons over age 55 are not able to adopt unless their spouse is under
55. Family income must be at least
$10,000 per family member including adopted child.
According to Chinese law, only one child may be adopted at a time.
The children are placed from orphanages located throughout China. Families will travel to the respective city to finalize the
legal process and then travel to Guangzhou to obtain the child’s visa. After
your dossier is sent to China, a referral normally follows in about eight to ten
months. Adoptions of children over three years of age will be expedited.
At the time of referral, families will receive a medical examination
report and a photo usually follows three weeks later.
You should plan to travel six to twelve weeks after receiving a referral.
Families are usually organized into groups of about six families for
travel, and they will be accompanied by an English-speaking escort all the way.
Parents should expect to spend 10 to 12 days in China.
It is possible for only one parent to travel; however, he/she must take a
well-documented (notarized, certified and authenticated) Power of Attorney from
the other spouse indicating authority/complete agreement with the adoption, and
the willingness to re-adopt. MAJOR STEPS FOR ADOPTION FROM CHINA · Prepare legal documents as required by the Chinese government ·
